Josef Umathum is one of the leading wine growers in Austria. The soils of Umathum's 62 acres are warm, and especially suitable for high quality red wines such as the local St. Laurent, a variation of Pinot Noir.

Umathum winery uses mainly old Austrian varieties. The soil and climate  are particularly suited to the growing of high quality wines.

Around the village of Frauenkirchen the soil is rich in minerals and has a high iron content, and conditions in the vineyards located on the north west shore of Lake Neusiedl are sandstone and slate.
